Hirebike

news: Docked or dockless bikeshare? Birmingham opts for both!

Transport for the West Midlands (TfWM) recently announced that nextbike has been appointed as their preferred public bikeshare scheme providers. This appointment marks the end of a year-long project for ITP, working with TfWM and all of the Borough Councils that make up the region’s Combined Authority, to build a robust evidence base to determine the feasibility of a region-wide cycle hire scheme.

Working alongside Bikeplus and BDS we produced a feasibility report to detail the evidence base that sat behind our recommendations, and assisted with a novel 'zero value' procurement process.  This helped the Combined Authority to agree a basis for collaboration with its preferred bikeshare providers, defining terms around complementary investment and activation support.

The decision by TfWM to implement a hybrid docked + dockless hire bike scheme allows for integration with the region’s SWIFT card fare products.  It will also ensure dedicated cycle hire docks are provided in central Birmingham.
